Our lesson is devoted to the
problems of the environment. ‘Mother Planet is showing us the red warning light
–‘be careful’-she is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our
own house.’ This is the motto of our lesson.
You can see a crossword on the blackboard.
I’ll read you the definitions of the words and you put them down. And then
you’ll be able to read the central word.
1. Harmful substances that are
used in chemistry. (chemicals)
2.To worry someone. ( concern)
5. Animals with feathers that
usually lay eggs and can fly. (birds)
8. To ask something as if
ordering. (demand)
10. An advantage, improvement
or help that you get from something.(benefit)

animal or plant stops existing. (extinction)
II Актуалізація опорних знань.
There
are many ecological problems in the world. Let’s listen to the reports our
pupils have prepared.
Hole in the Sky
British scientists in Antarctica made a shocking announcement in May. In the
atmosphere over the South Pole, a hole the size of the United States had opened up in the
ozone layer.
Ozone is a natural gas in the Earth’s upper
atmosphere. It is the Earth’s only protection from the sun’s harmful
ultraviolet rays. ЕThe ozone hole was caused by the
release of man-made chemicals called CFCs, used in foam packaging, coolants and
other products. Less ozone means more UV. The effects of increased UV are
serious. UV can be harmful to plants, animals and people. Even a small loss of
the ozone shield can hurt crops and trees. It can upset ecosystems and increase
cases of skin cancer in humans, wildlife and the environment, countries of the
world began joining forces. They released it would take all of us working
together to protect the ozone layer.
Global Warming
In the last twenty years, the world’s weather
has changed a lot. Terrible storms, forest fires and floods have destroyed
cities and ruined crops all over the world. Many scientists believe that these
things are happening because our planet is getting hotter. They think the
changing weather is caused by global warming. When heat from the sun hits the
Earth, most of this heat goes back into space. But some gases, like carbon
dioxide, catch the heat. Carbon dioxide is important because it controls the
Earth’s temperature, but pollution and cutting down trees increase the carbon
dioxide in the air, and this causes global warming. Our planet is getting to
hot because of pollution.
The Greenhouse Effect
Industrial countries also cause the
‘greenhouse effect’. Industry, power stations and cars produce carbon dioxide.
This gas works like the glass walls of a greenhouse. It lets in the sun; but it
doesn’t let out the heat. So the Earth gets hotter and hotter.
Let’s discuss the main
questions of the reports.
1. What is ozone? ( It’s a
natural gas in the Earth’s upper atmosphere)
2. What was the ozone hole
caused by? (It was caused by the release of chemicals called CFCs)
3. Why has the world’s weather
changed a lot? (Because of global warming)
4. What causes the global
warming? ( Carbon dioxide)
5. How does carbon dioxide
work causing the greenhouse effect? (It lets in the sun but it doesn’t let out
the heat)

problem of the environment.
Pesticide’s pollution.
2.Бесіда за
запитаннями.
1. What are the types of water
pollution? ( Surface water pollution, ground water pollution, chemical pollution,
microbiological pollution)
2. What are the types of
pesticides? (herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, disinfectants)
3. What are they used for?
(for killing weeds, insects, rodents)
4. What are disinfectants used
for? ( They prevent the spread of bacteria)
5. Where are pesticides used
for? (on farms, in houses, in nurseries)
6. How do pesticides kill
underground plants? ( They make water murky)
7. What can we do to protect
water? What is the way out? ( We can pull out weeds by hand, manually remove
pests, place traps, use organic-garden products, improve cleanliness, reduce
using of pesticides, take care of what we put on the ground)

Presenter Hello and welcome to the Conservation Programme. Today I’m on the streets of Manchester . I’m
interviewing young people about the environment. Excuse me, what’s your name?
Tina Tina
Presenter Hi, Tina. Can I ask you about the
environment?
Tina Yes, of course. I’m really interested
in the environment.
Presenter What
environmental problems are you worried about?
Tina I’m really worried about air
pollution. There’s so much traffic on the roads.
Presenter Do your
parents have a car?
Tina Yes, they do, but we only use it for
long journeys. We’ve all got bikes and I cycle to school. We use our bikes a
lot. I also think people should use their cars less and walk more. Walking is
good for your health, too.
Presenter Thank you, Tina. That’s a good idea. Excuse
me, what’s your name?
Tim Tim
Presenter Are you concerned about the environment, Tim?
Tim Well, I don’t know really. But the
weather is changing a lot. Is that because of global warming?
Presenter Well, a lot of scientists think so.
Tim And people throw away too much
rubbish, don’t they?
Presenter Yes,
they do. So, what can we do to stop that?
Tim Well, we could recycle a lot more
rubbish. I think every school should have recycling bins.
Presenter That’s
a good idea. Thank you ,Tim. Excuse me, what’s your name?
Jack Jack
Presenter Hello
Jack. Are you worried about the environment?
Jack
Yes, definitely. The rainforests are being destroyed, and that’s really
terrible!
Presenter And how does that affect the environment?
Jack Well, it affects the environment in
lots of ways. Cutting down trees causes global warming . Also, some of the
animals that live in the forests don’t have anywhere to live. We must protect
our rain forests because a lot of animals will die without the forests.
Presenter What can people do to protect the
rainforests?
Jack There are a lot of things that
people can do. You should look on the Internet. There’s a lot of information there
about what we can do to help.
Presenter Thank you, Jack. OK. Excuse me, what’s
your name?
